#NTIA VILLA: What are the constraints envisaged while designing on a vast 3,424 sqms sloppy terrain of land?

A topographical survey is carried out to further inform you of the nature of the land and its contours, an ensuing battle to create a design that works harmoniously with the natural contours, intelligently using split levels, cut and fill concepts, cantilevers slabs or elevated foundations, the constant phone calls with the consultant engineer to determine the nature and position of retaining walls to avoid collapse, storm water drainage management, planning for safe and practical path ways, driveways, parking areas considering the incline, makes sure the landscape enhances the natural beauty of the design, controlling erosion and blending the structure seamlessly with the environment.

All these and more were foremost in designing this country home 6 bed villa that comes with a central fountain, games room, 3 living spaces, recreational outdoor spaces inclusive of a fire pit. A lower level basement would serve the maids, inverter, laundry and storage facilities located at the North wing of the site.

The basic concept was to reinforce communal living as the client would retreat periodically with the nuclear and extended family members all housed in this Neo classical type traditional development.

#U VILLA: Contemporary 5 bed with 2 bed staff quarter’s on 691sqms.

Site comprises of ample landscape, driveway, service building, pool deck, cascading fountain with sculpture and a cascading pool.

Main building incorporates solar alternative power source with an inverter room, voided lounge, gym, study, cinema, an open dry kitchen in its living room, storage space in the master bed, stairs and a pneumatic lift for vertical circulation. Its external ramp and wide doors emphasizes its design for inclusion of the physically challenged.

Exterior facade concept takes precedence due to its proximity to the ever busy and fast paced Aba road. The building reciprocates same in its zest for dynamics, expressed in its kinetic mix of sharp angles and delineated facade planes on all sides of its exterior.

#Elysium: This design development in Abia state by Ebisike Tochukwu Architects, contemporary 6 bed detached smart home villa comes ready with open plan living day spaces on the ground floor. A typical case of a clear interaction of outdoor and indoor communication made possible with its carefully placed large glazing fenestrations on the north portion of its orientation which has reduced heat build up and solar glare. A glass wine rack in its lobby, cinema and guest rooms.

A drive from its slim boulevard site entry leads you to its central fountain, parking spaces and rich green landscape. All positioned to be seen clearly from its double voided living spaces on its 3 floors. It’s central spherical staircase transitioning all floors is punctured by a dome skylight to throw light in from its south facing solar present rear.

Recreation remains a major part of the clients intent with a main portion of his site on the west wing calling for a calm evening swim, family get togethers for relaxation and fun.

#Slope HOUSE: How are houses on slopes designed to fit into a slope yet have spaces that remain functional?

We embarked on this project with the traditional cut and fill concept of constructing on a medium inclined land mass. Being met with a slope of about 2.6ms height variance from road level to its lowest portion on a 750sqms plot size, this country home was divided into 3 levels; having the main entrance, ante room, guest quarters and 3 bedrooms plus its family day living area cleverly tucked away from visitors on the ground floor level.

A basement (lower level) floor is created to accommodate the main living areas visitors climb down to with its dining, open and wet kitchen plus a wall winery. A gym is cleverly situated here with all space functions overlooking a pool at this level.

The pentfloor above contains a cinema, kitchenette, master lounge, master and madams bedroom, an extra vanity room, large walk in closet and an outdoor sky terrace.

The traditional gable roofing system as demanded by the client is over exaggerated in its front facade with a punctuation over the sky terrace of the pent floor.

Water flowing towards the rear of the site posses a major problem and is taken care of by the use of “slump pits” at the 2 major extremes of the site for water retention and pumped to the front of the site.
